The "Run-Down": Hockinson and Woodland @ Home

There is no place like home - especially on a beautiful warm October day on the Columbia River. However, the site more beautiful than the natural scenery was the smiles on the faces of dozens of Panthers after completing great races, helping us to 8 victories out of 8 opportunities.

The Middle Schoolers started things off by overwhelming Woodland with massive numbers (not to mention exceptional quality in those numbers). Hockinson did not place any runners on the starting line to challenge us. The winning time of 11:04 by 8th Grader Gabriel Dinnel established a new course record. The brigade of Panther boys follow right behind with 8th Graders Troy Prince-Butterfield, Koy Chaston and Ian Palmer with 7th grader Andres Magana all within one minute. The improvement of the week came from 7th grader Casey Rappe who posted a very impressive 38 seconds on a faster Nike Pre-National course. Fellow 7th Grader Jackson Kaiser was the only other MS boy to manage to break his PR from two weeks early. Nice job boys!

For the MS girls, we managed to get the magic number 5 in front of the lone Woodland girl. 8th Grader Amelia Pullen was the 3rd MS runner to impress us by running a PR on our home course. She has been inching up in classmate and amazing friend Allison Warta. Their times of 12:08 and 12:15 put them in good position to place very high at the Vancouver City Meet next week. 8th Grader Brooklyn Bausch to vengeance on the 3K distance (she was a DNF at Nike Pre-Nationals) with a time much faster than the marred race at HRV - establishing a solid PR of 14:43. The times of 7th Grader Morgan Stinchfield and 8th Grader in and Annabelle Palmer proved that they ran fine races as well by nearly matching their Nike Pre-National times.

Our High School girls had a pretty easy time with a less than full strength Woodland team (holding out a few runners with injuries) and the Hockinson gals. A 1-3 finish overall (1-2 vs. Hockinson) by Sophomores Courtney Owens and Hannah Lintala paced the Panthers to a 23-33 win over the hawks. The Beavers were incomplete, thus could not post a team score. Senior Karina Miller had her best performance of the year relative to the course difficulty, while still holding back some energy for future racing. An intense effort from Freshman Amber Habkirk each time she raced past the crowd brought many cheers from the fans. However, the most encouraging effort had to be that of Sophomore Lydia Lyall a couple of days after being cleared from concussion issues. Her famous words after completing the course was "I didn't die out there." confirmed that she was back to her usual self, ready to contribute to the team success in the weeks to come.

The boys race was quite possibly the largest race ever at William Clark Park. 55 runners from the three combined schools toed the starting line. Although the negotiation of the course by the runners was less than perfect (the top two took a "long-cut" on the last loop), it hardly affected the scores. The boys managed solid wins of 21-36 and 24-34 against Hockinson and Woodland respectively. Junior Bailey Duncan patiently waited to the last mile to make a move and get another win in his career, while Sophomore Aiden Pullen was one of those that went off course. Aiden was applauded for running a perfect first 2 miles. Bailey's 17:34 was a fine time for a Black Course PR. Other juniors Luke Belzer and Collin Manning closed out the top 5 Panthers. Senior Nicolas Velardi ran with authority the first mile (a bit too fast) but finished our third runner some 6 plus seconds ahead of his perennial nemesis Benjamin Zora from Hockinson. Other noteworthy performances came from Senior Jesse Reagan and Freshmen Tanner Lees, Jamison Wright and Bryson Schurman as they claimed "any course" PR's as they apparently ignored the fact that we were on a Black Course.

Each High School team extended their win streaks to 4, and look to next week's race against Mark Morris for the last dual meet of the season.
